- Art in Ireland in the Middle Ages
Rapporteur: cultural historian Gáborján Kovács
In medieval Ireland, there was a strange mixture of a cultural heritage that was at least a thousand years old, the Celtic tradition, and the new traditions of Christianity that had been adopted in the 5th century. The Irish had learned to write, adopted the new religion's system, its way of thinking and its symbols, but they also held on to their old ways of decoration. Reminders of this peaceful cultural mixing are the artifacts of medieval Ireland, the beautifully decorated codices, the jewellery, the ecclesiastical objects and the Irish crosses. This talk will explore the ways in which they were made, their cultural background and the symbolism of their decoration.
