The Orphan is set in Budapest in the spring of 1957. After the failed revolution, a large part of Hungarian society has succumbed to the repression, the disappearance of revolutionaries and resistance fighters, and the despair that has followed for more than three decades, and the Kádár era has begun. Andor, 12, is being raised alone by his mother, a boy who still hopes that his father, who disappeared in the war, will return. One day a man appears at their home claiming to be Andor's father. The boy refuses to accept the stranger as his father. But the man moves in with them and the boy is forced to confront his illusions. As the rift between mother and son deepens, Andor is determined to save his family from the man at any cost.
Directed by László Nemes Jeles, Saul's Son received an unprecedented number of awards in the history of Hungarian filmmaking.
