It is a four-generation family story that follows the characters from the early 1900s to the early 2000s. The protagonist, Mother, lives to be 94 and moves twenty-seven times in her life - history chases her across the country and through the turbulent 20th century. With an exemplary sense of danger, she drags her husband and daughter with her every time she smells danger. And there is always danger amid the turbulent events of this century.
