Recently widowed Andrew Blake leaves London to return to the estate in France where he once met his wife. But the journey to happier times does not go at all according to plan... Blake is forced to play the role of butler in order to stay at the Beauvillier estate. In addition to the strange mistress of the house, Madame Beauvillier, he meets Odile, the determined cook, Philippe, the stubborn caretaker who lives as a hermit at the end of the park, and Manon, the young cleaning lady.
