In 1916, the choir in the Yorkshire town of Ramsden loses almost all its male members to conscription. Despite the difficulties, the choir's management wants to continue working together: they decide to recruit young men from the local area who are not eligible for the draft because of their age. The young men are joined by a new choir leader: the unyielding, self-possessed, and oddly methodical Dr. Henry Guthrie (Ralph Fiennes). As the draft warrants come in, the whole community realizes that the best defense against the chaos that is turning their lives upside down is to play music together.
