Roaming Europe's UNESCO Geoparks (which are not just "about" the stones)

Speaker: Barnabás Korbély, Geopark Team Leader (Balaton-Upper Hungary National Park Directorate)

The first geoparks were established in Europe 25 years ago and today there are no fewer than 109 geoparks in 28 European countries. What is behind this - not exaggerating - unprecedented "success story"? Why has UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) decided to "put its name" to this movement from 2015? How has it managed to avoid the ivory tower of earth sciences by a long way and finally reach out to a wide range of lay people? Apart from stunning landscapes, what experiences can we expect in a UNESCO Geopark? In a lecture illustrated with spectacular photos, these questions will be answered by our speaker, who is also carrying out an evaluation of aspiring geoparks on behalf of UNESCO on different continents of the world.
