In this psychological crime thriller, which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes, the world's most prestigious film festival, Sandra's (Sandra Hüller - Toni Erdmann) seemingly idyllic life is crumbling like a house of cards. The successful German writer lives with her French husband and their visually impaired child in a small village in the French Alps. After his sudden death, it is unclear whether it was an accident, suicide or murder. Sandra is therefore at the centre of an extremely stressful investigation and trial.
In the almost Hitchcockian tradition of the film, we follow the events from the wife's point of view, while the viewer is also left to question her innocence. But The Anatomy of a Fall is much more than a crime story: director Justine Triet is primarily interested in marriage and, more fundamentally, in the deepest layers of human relationships.
